Limited Edition of 1000 Models Worldwide

The Dornier Do 17 was not generally used in the North African desert, which makes this aircraft something of an enigma. ZG 26 “Horst Wessel” was one of the most famous of all the Luftwaffe fighter groups, as they often painted a bright yellow wasp on the nose of their Bf 110 fighters. It is believed this Dornier Do17 was on strength with them as a transport or squadron hack before its capture and subsequent testing at the hands of the RAF during the Italian campaign.

The prototype Do17 was built in 1934 in response to a Lufthansa requirement for a 6-passenger mail plane. However, the design was rejected partly due to the slim fuselage, which would later give the aircraft its nickname 'The Flying Pencil'. The military showed interest in the design and it was developed as a medium bomber and long-range reconnaissance aircraft. The Do 17 was used extensively on all fronts during World War II, although by 1942 it started to be withdrawn from mainline duties.

In 1937 Do 17Es were sent to Spain and saw action in the civil war. Combat experience gained during this conflict shaped the further development of the aircraft and in particular the defensive armament was increased and a new nose added. The new variant was the Dornier Do 17Z. This aircraft saw considerable action during the Battle of Britain in 1940.

The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.
