The Dornier Do 215 was developed as an export version of the Do 17Z series and was used as a bomber, reconnaissance and night fighter aircraft. The Swedish Government ordered eighteen Do 215 A-1 bombers, but an embargo was placed on their export before any were delivered and they were modified for use by the Luftwaffe as reconnaissance aircraft. The Do 215 retained the pencil like fuselage of the Do 17 but it was powered by Daimler Benz DB 601 engines, giving it a marked improvement in performance. The Dornier Do 215 B-5 "Kauz III" was a dedicated night fighter version featuring IR searchlight in the nose, FuG 202 Lichtenstein BC radar, four 7.62mm machine guns in the upper nose and two 20mm MG FF cannons in the lower nose. The Do 215 of which this model is based was the personal aircraft of Gruppenkommandeur Helmut Lent and served with Stab II/NJG 2, in Leeuwarden during the summer of 1942.
The prototype Do17 was built in 1934 in response to a Lufthansa requirement for a 6-passenger mail plane. However, the design was rejected partly due to the slim fuselage, which would later give the aircraft its nickname 'The Flying Pencil'. The military showed interest in the design and it was developed as a medium bomber and long-range reconnaissance aircraft. The Do 17 was used extensively on all fronts during World War II, although by 1942 it started to be withdrawn from mainline duties.
The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.
