'Operation Merkur’ was the code name given to the German invasion of Crete that took place in May 1941. The use of paratroopers would be central to the success of the operation to take this Greek island and extensive use was made of the venerable Junkers Ju 52. Much loved by the troops it carried, the Ju 52 was vulnerable to attack from both ground and air and although Crete eventually fell to German forces, it was a costly operation in terms of casualties. Ju-52 #4U+NH was used during this operation, delivering German paratroopers to one of four strategic targets on the island. Despite coming under significant defensive fire, the aircraft survived the invasion and went on to serve in North Africa.

The Junkers Ju 52 was a German tri-motor transport aircraft that was used for both civilian and military service. First flown in October 1930, the Ju 52 was developed primarily as a passenger and cargo aircraft. In civilian use, the Ju 52 flew with several air carriers including Swissair and Deutsche Lufthansa. In the military role, it was used by the German Luftwaffe during World War II as a troop and cargo transport aircraft and briefly as a medium bomber. The Ju 52 continued in use after the war with military and civilian air fleets. The Swiss Air Force operated the aircraft from 1939 to 1982 when three aircraft remained in operation.

The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.
