The Junkers Ju 52 was used in large numbers in the occupation of Austria, Czechoslovakia and in the forefront of the invasions of Norway, Denmark and when Holland was invaded at which time many were destroyed. The German airborne invasion of Crete was the most costly of any undertaken by the Luftwaffe. A third of the 500 Ju 52s operating from Greece were destroyed or badly damaged. In the Russian Campaign, the Ju 52 transports played an important role. This aircraft, based at the Luftwaffe multi-engine flying school in Norway, was pressed into action on the Eastern Front in December 1941.

The Junkers Ju 52 was a German tri-motor transport aircraft that was used for both civilian and military service. First flown in October 1930, the Ju 52 was developed primarily as a passenger airliner and cargo aircraft. In civilian use the Ju 52 flew with many air carriers including Swissair and Deutsche Lufthansa. In the military role, it was used by the Luftwaffe as a troop and cargo transport aircraft and briefly as a medium bomber. For air defense and tactical ground support it was armed with multiple machine guns and fitted with bomb racks capable of carrying 1,500 kg (3,300 lbs.) of bombs. During World War II, Ju-52s in different configurations served on all fronts and in a variety of roles. The Ju 52 continued in service after the war with military and civilian air fleets. The Swiss Air Force operated the Ju 52 from 1939 to 1982 when three aircraft remained in operation, probably the last and longest service in any nations air force.
