BAC Lightning F.6 XR770 joined the RAF on September 26, 1966 with No. 74 Squadron at RAF Leuchars followed by service with No. 23 and 56 Squadrons. In 1980 this Lightning was sent to RAF Binbrook and flew with No. 5 Squadron as the commanding officers aircraft, coded with an 'A'. Recoded 'AA' in 1987, XR770 was the aircraft of the CO, Wing Commander Andy Williams, who initially had the tail fin painted scarlet. But, as the end of Lightning operations approached the entire length of the spine and leading edges of the wing were also painted scarlet. In June 2008, it was transferred to RAF Waddington for restoration and display by 5 Squadron, which is their current operating base.
The English Electric (BAC) Lightning F.6 was an improved, longer range variant of the F.3 and one of the final versions of this aircraft. Noted for its exceptional speed and weapons carrying capability, the Lightning will be remembered as a potent interceptor; defending Great Britain’s airspace against Soviet intrusions throughout the height of the Cold War.
