The Roland D.VI was a German fighter aircraft operated by the Luftstreitkräfte (Imperial German Army Air Service) during World War I. First flown in November of 1917, the Roland entered into a fighter competition with the Fokker D.VII in January 1918. Although the Fokker won the fly-off competition, orders were also placed for the Roland as insurance against production problems with the Fokker. A total of 350 Roland’s were manufactured; 150 D.VIa powered by a Mercedes 160 hp D.III engine and 200 D.VIb with a Benz Bz.IIIa engine of similar power.
