1:72 Scale. Length: 7.4”. Wingspan: 9"
In December 1943, Mosquito FB.VIs replaced the Bristol Beaufighters of 248 Squadron, which moved from Talbenny, Cornwell, to RAF Baniff in Scotland, to fly against enemy shipping off the Norwegian coast. This Mosquito was flown by Flt. Lt. Stanley G. Nunn and Flg. Off. J.M. Carlin and was one of four that attacked German Type VIIC U-Boat submarine U-821, commanded by Oberleutnant Ulrich Knacfuss, off Ushant Island, on June 10, 1944, forcing the crew to abandon ship. The U-Boat was eventually sunk by an RAF B-24 Liberator of No. 206 Squadron. In July of 1944, Mosquito “T-Tommy” made a belly landing at Portreath after suffering flak damage, which knocked out its port engine. The Mosquito was repaired and later served with No. 8 Operational Training Unit, before being withdrawn from use in August 1946.
The de Havilland Mosquito was a British two-seat multi-role combat aircraft that served with the Royal Air Force during World War II and postwar era. When the Mosquito entered production in 1941, it was one of the fastest operational aircraft in the world. It was originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, but was adapted to other roles during the war, including: intruder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, low to medium altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, maritime strike aircraft and high-speed photo-reconnaissance aircraft. The Mosquito’s lightweight wood construction and powerful Merlin engines gave it exceptional performance.
