In the 1983 film Blue Thunder, Francis McNeil "Frank" Murphy (Roy Scheider) is a Los Angeles Police Department pilot-officer selected to fly the world's most advanced helicopter, nicknamed Blue Thunder. Murphy is told that the military-style stealth helicopter is intended for police use as a surveillance platform and for large crowd control and riot missions.
The helicopter used in the film was a modified French Aérospatiale SA-341G Gazelle
