AC Transit is an Oakland-based public transit agency serving the western portions of Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay area. They also operate "Transbay" routes across San Francisco Bay to San Francisco and selected areas in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
The Flxible Company introduced its New Look transit bus design in 1959 with regular production starting in 1960. It looked similar to the General Motors New Look bus. Both had a large 6-piece “fishbowl” style windshield, fluted aluminum siding and forward slanted passenger windows. The 53102 was part of the third generation of Flxible New Look buses (1973-1978) and was replaced in 1978 with the "870" Advanced Design Bus. From 1960 to 1978 Flxible built 13,121 New Look transit buses.
