1:200 Scale. Length: 7". Wingspan: 7.5"
During the Vietnam War EC-121R Warning Stars were used to monitor enemy movements. On June 4, 1969 EC-121R #67-21487 c/n 4480, former USN 143206, departed Korat RTAFB for an eight hour on site orbit. Shortly after entering the orbit all four of the aircrafts engines shut down without any warning. Without pressure from the engines there were no hydraulics and the pilot had to wrestle with manual controls to keep the aircraft from diving and/or rolling. Eventually the engines were restarted and the EC-121 was flown to the nearest base at Da Nang, the aircraft thus becoming the “Da Nang Glider”. No explanation was ever reached as to why this occurred.
The Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star was a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy airborne early warning radar surveillance aircraft. A military version of the Super Constellation airliner, the EC-121 was designed to serve as an airborne early warning system to supplement the Distant Early Warning Line. The USAF used the EC-121 in Vietnam as electronic sensor monitors and to detect enemy aircraft activity. Introduced in 1954 the EC-121 was retired in 1978 and was replaced by the E-3 Sentry (a modified Boeing 707) which entered service with the USAF starting in 1977.
