Lockheed EC-121K Warning Star (Super Constellation) – #137890, US Navy, Pacific Missile Range, NAS Point Mugu, CA, 1962

1:200 Scale.  Length: 7".  Wingspan: 7.5"

Lockheed 1049A EC-121 Warning Star (137890 c/n 1049A-4347) was delivered to the US Navy in March 1955. This type of aircraft was designated a WV-2, referred to as "Willie Victor" by its crews. In 1962 they were re-designated EC-121 but kept the Warning Star nickname. EC-121K #137890 was assigned to NAS Point Mugu, California, Pacific Missile Range as a down-range missile tracker. In May of 1979 #137890 was placed in storage until October 1985 when it was moved to Tinker AFB, Oklahoma and displayed as 53-0552.

The Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star was a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy airborne early warning radar surveillance aircraft. A military version of the Super Constellation airliner, the EC-121 was designed to serve as a airborne early warning system to supplement the Distant Early Warning Line, using two large radomes, one above and one below the fuselage. EC-121s were also used for intelligence gathering. The USAF used the EC-121 in Vietnam as electronic sensor monitors and to detect enemy aircraft activity as well as other operations. Introduced in 1954 the EC-121 was retired from service in 1978, although a single specially modified NC-121K remained in use with the US Navy. The EC-121 was replaced by the Boeing E-3 Sentry (a modified Boeing 707) which entered service with the USAF starting in 1977.
