Lockheed EC-121D Warning Star (Super Constellation) - 552nd AEW&C Wing, USAF, Korat RTAFB, Thailand, 1967
1:200 Scale. Length: 7". Wingspan: 7.5"
In April 1965, as the buildup in Southeast Asia continued, the 552nd AEW&CW (Airborne Early Warning & Control Wing) was deployed to Korat RTAB, Thailand to assist in operations against the North Vietnamese. This portion of the operation was named Big Eye Force, but would later be changed to College Eye Task Force. On October 24, 1967, EC-121D serial 53-0555 became the first airborne radar aircraft to guide an F-4 Phantom to a successful kill of a MiG-21. It is on display at Wright Patterson AF in Dayton Ohio.
The Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star was a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy airborne early warning radar surveillance aircraft. A military version of the Super Constellation airliner, the EC-121 was designed to serve as a airborne early warning system to supplement the Distant Early Warning Line, using two large radomes, one above and one below the fuselage. EC-121s were also used for intelligence gathering. The USAF used the EC-121 in Vietnam as electronic sensor monitors and to detect enemy aircraft activity as well as other operations. Introduced in 1954 the EC-121 was retired from service in 1978, although a single specially modified NC-121K remained in use with the US Navy until its retirement in June 1982. The EC-121 was replaced by the Boeing E-3 Sentry (a modified Boeing 707), which entered service with the USAF starting in 1977.
