The 29th production Douglas DC-6 commercial airliner was modified to serve as the aircraft for the President of the United States. Designated VC-118, the aircraft was officially commissioned on July 4, 1947 and named “Independence” in honor of President Harry S. Truman’s home town of Independence, MO. The rear section became a stateroom while the main cabin could seat 24 passengers or be converted into 12 sleeper berths. In May 1953, after nearly six years of White House service, "Independence" was retired as the Presidential aircraft and subsequently served several Air Force organizations as a VIP transport. In 1965 it was sent to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, where it is on display.Historically accurate printed markings
