The Douglas C-54 Skymaster is a four-engine transport aircraft used by the U.S. armed forces in World War II and the Korean War. It was also used by the Royal Air Force, French Air Force and the armed forces of at least 12 other nations. The C-54, derived from the Douglas DC-4 civilian airliner, was first flown of February 14, 1942 and began service the same year. After the Korean War the C-54 continued to be used for military and civilian uses. The last active C-54 Skymaster in U.S. Navy service (C-54Q, 56501, of the Navy Test Pilot School) was retired on April 2, 1974.
