In late 2010 the 1st Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade along with 4 other units deployed to Afghanistan in support of “Operation Enduring Freedom XI”. These units were spread to various locations throughout the country with the 1-10 Aviation going to Base Salerno, Khost Province Afghanistan as Task Force “Tigershark”. The Boeing AH-64 Apaches were tasked with security and reconnaissance mission over eastern Afghanistan. The 10th CAB Apache helicopters also provided aerial surveillance and close combat attack capabilities in support ground forces.
The AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine attack helicopter operated by the U.S. Army and the military forces of several other countries. Originally developed by Hughes Helicopters in the 1970s as a replacement for the Bell AH-1 Cobra, the Apache is now built by Boeing. The YAH-64 prototype was first flown on September 30, 1975, with the production model entering service in 1986. The AH-64 has served in conflicts in Panama, the Persian Gulf, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. Over 2,000 have been produced to date in several variants.
