US Navy Helicopter Attack Squadron (Light) Three (HA(L)3) “Seawolves” was formed in 1966 to support Naval Special Warfare operations and Mobile Riverine Forces in Vietnam. The unit was organized using volunteer pilots and officially commissioned in April 1967. The Seawolves were used for SAR, reconnaissance, medevac and insertion and extraction of U.S. Navy Seals. The squadron was decommissioned on January 26 1972, having flown over 120,000 combat sorties over Vietnam and Cambodia, with 44 being killed in action and more than 200 wounded.
The Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, better known as the 'Huey', first started arriving in Vietnam in 1962. It was used in a variety of roles including Medevac and as a troop and material transport. The UH-1 was also used for air assault and could be equipped with guns, rockets and grenade launchers. Introduced in 1959, over 16,000 Bell Huey helicopters were built in different variants.
