In 1940 Charles (Chuck) Older was assigned to USMC VMF-1. In July of 1941 he resigned from the Marine Corps and joined the American Volunteer Group (AVG). The AVG squadrons were “Adam and Eve”, “Panda Bear” and “Hell’s Angels” to which Older was assigned. In December 1941 Older scored five aerial victories over Rangoon, Burma. Older became a double Ace with the AVG and later added eight more aerial victories. Older fought in Korea and when he retired became a judge who presided over the Charles Manson case.
The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was a single-engine fighter and ground attack aircraft. First flown on October 14, 1938, the P-40 was used by most Allied powers during World War II, and remained in service until the end of the war. The P-40 performed well as an air superiority fighter, at times suffering severe losses but also taking a very heavy toll of enemy aircraft. It was the third most produced American fighter aircraft after the P-51 and P-47. By November 1944 when production of the P-40 ended, 13,738 had been built.
