Operation Torch was an Anglo-American invasion of French Morocco and Algeria that were the bases for the Vichy French forces and navy. On November 8, 1942 the invasion began and was completed on November 16. Part of Task Force 34 was the USN USS Ranger with VF-9 being one of the squadrons. One sortie carried out by VF-9 included nine F4Fs led by Lt. Cmdr. Jack Raby. The F4Fs made passes over Cazes airfield located southwest of Casablanca destroying many aircraft still on the ground. VF-9 also shot down six Vichy airborne aircraft.
The F4F Wildcat was a carrier-based fighter that began service with the U.S. Navy and Britain's Fleet Air Arm in 1940. The F4F would become the primary carrier fighter for the first year and a half of the U.S. Navy's involvement in WWII in the Pacific. The Navy retired the Wildcat in 1945.
