In March 1941 Robert E. Galer was appointed Captain and in 1942 became the CO of VMF-224 ‘Fighting Bengals’ and promoted to Major. Between August 30 and November 2, 1942 VMF-224 shot down 60 enemy aircraft with Galer credited with 11 of these during a 29 day period flying the F4F-3 Wildcat. After World War II Galer served in the Korean War; ending his flying career with 14 aerial victories. Robert Galer retired as a Brigadier General who had received the Medal of Honor, the British DFC and Purple Heart plus numerous other commendations.
The F4F Wildcat was a carrier-based fighter that began service with the U.S. Navy and Britain's Fleet Air Arm in 1940. The F4F would become the primary carrier fighter for the first year and a half of the U.S. Navy's involvement in WWII in the Pacific. The Navy retired the Wildcat in 1945.
