LTCDR Edward H. “Butch” O’Hare became the U.S. Navy’s first Ace and two months later was awarded the Medal of Honor, the first World War II USN aviator to do so. On February 20, 1942 he attacked a formation of nine Japanese Mitsubishi G4M “Betty” bombers and single handedly shot down five of the attackers and damaged a sixth. On the night of November 26, 1943 O’Hare was shot down and never found. He was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously. In his honor a U.S. Navy destroyer and Chicago’s Orchard Depot Airport were named O’Hare.Opening canopy

The F4F Wildcat was a carrier-based fighter that began service with the U.S. Navy and Britain's Fleet Air Arm in 1940. The F4F would become the primary carrier fighter for the first year and a half of the U.S. Navy's involvement in WWII in the Pacific. The Navy retired the Wildcat in 1945.
