Originally assigned to VMF-221, Marion E. Carl scored his first victory on June 4 1942 during the Battle of Midway. After rest in Hawaii, Carl was re-assigned to VMF-223 “Bulldogs”. On August 20 1942 VMF-223 was deployed to Guadalcanal and on September 9, 1942 Carl was shot down and was missing for five days before returning. Marion Carl became the USMC’s first ace with 3 of his victories occurring later in September. Carl ended the war with 18.5 victories, the Marine Corps seventh highest ranking ace.Opening canopy

The F4F Wildcat was a carrier-based fighter that began service with the U.S. Navy and Britain's Fleet Air Arm in 1940. The F4F would become the primary carrier fighter for the first year and a half of the U.S. Navy's involvement in WWII in the Pacific. The Navy retired the Wildcat in 1945.
