Charles McGee while assigned to the 302nd FS/332nd FG (Tuskegee Airmen) who named the P-51 using his wife’s nickname “Kitten”. Lt. McGee flew this particular aircraft for 136 of 408 total combat flights that spanned three wars. During the Korean War, McGee flew a P-51 also named ‘Kitten’ and in Vietnam he flew an RF-4 Phantom II as C/O of the 16th TRS. Charles McGee dedicated 31 years in service to his country.
The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944. As well as being economical to produce, the P-51 was a fast and durable aircraft.
