On April 8, 1944 the 352nd FG received P-51B Mustangs. P-51B # 43-6506, piloted by John “Muscles” Bennett of the 487th FS, also had a fearsome Tiger-Mouth in addition to the blue nose. The 352nd FG completed nearly 60,000 combat hours, 519 aerial victories and 287 aircraft destroyed on the ground. The Germans referred to them as “The Blue Nosed Bastards of Bodney”.
The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944.
