Vought F4U-1A Corsair #883 belonged to VMF-214 “Black Sheep” Squadron and was a shared ride for 1st Lt. Bob McClurg and Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington. The aircraft wore the name “Martha” which was McClurg’s mother’s name. On August 7, 1943 McClurg joined VMF-214 and served two tours with the squadron, scoring seven aerial victories between September 16, 1943 and December 28, 1943. In September 1943 Maj. Boyington took command of VMF-214 and on December 26, 1943 he shot down four Japanese Zeros over Rabaul. Boyington had 20 victories with VMF-214.

The Vought F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft used during World War II and the Korean War. First flown on May 29, 1940, the F4U entered operational service in 1942. It paired a lightweight fuselage with a powerful engine and a large propeller. In addition to its use by the United States and Great Britain, the F4U was also used by New Zealand, France, and other air forces (some until the 1960s) following the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in United Stated history (1942-53). A total of 12,571 Corsairs were manufactured in 16 variants.
