U.S. Marine Corps fighter squadron VMF-213 “Hell Hawks” was formed on July 1, 1942 at Ewa field. They left Ewa on February 21 1943 and arrived at Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides on March 1, 1943, where they received their first F4U Corsairs. On June 17, 1943 the squadron was sent to the Russell Islands (part of the Solomon Islands), 30 miles northwest of Guadalcanal, where they relieved VMF-124. On December 9, 1943, VMF-213 returned to the U.S. for R&R.
First flown in May 1940, the F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw service during World War II and Korean War. It paired a lightweight fuselage with a powerful engine and a large propeller. The Corsair was operated by some nations air forces until the 1960s following the longest production run of a piston-engined fighter in U.S. history. 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured by Vought, in 16 separate models.
