On May 1 1944 a new squadron was formed and designated VF-84 “Wolf Gang”, the US Navy’s first day-fighter Corsair squadron. It was composed mostly of former VF-17 veterans and Lt. Cdr Roger Hedrick, former X/O of VF-17, was appointed the C/O. Later, Hedrick assumed the job of the air group’s commanding officer of VF-84. While flying from the USS Bunker Hill on February 25, 1945, Roger Hedrick destroyed 2 Ki-84 Hayate "Frank" and a Zero bringing his record to 12 aircraft destroyed and 4 damaged.

The Corsair was operated by some nations air forces until the 1960s following the longest production run of a piston-engined fighter in U.S. history. 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured by Vought, in 16 separate models.
