Ira C Kepford was the US Navy’s most successful F4U Corsair pilot with 16 confirmed victories 1 probable and 1 damaged. Assigned to VF-17 “Jolly Rogers” in 1943, the squadron arrived at the Solomon Islands where Kepford saw five months of combat duty. With 16 confirmed kills at the end of February 1944 he had become the US Navy’s top ace, a distinction he retained until June. Assigned to Fleet Air Command in March of that year, he was then transferred to VF-84 in June. In December, Kepford was attached to the Staff of Commander Fleet Air, West Coast, where he served until the end of the war.
First flown in May 1940, the F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw service during World War II and Korean War. It paired a lightweight fuselage with a powerful engine and a large propeller. The Corsair was operated by some nations air forces until the 1960s following the longest production run of a piston-engined fighter in U.S. history. 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured by Vought, in 16 separate models.
