In 1938 Irishman Brendan “Paddy” Finucane joined the Royal Air Force and two years later was flying Spitfires with No. 65 Squadron. In April 1941 he was transferred to 452 Squadron where he scored seventeen victories between July and October 1941, when he turned 21. After a short rest, Finucane was transferred to the No. 602 Squadron and in June 1942 became the youngest Wing Commander in RAF (Hornchurch) history. On July 15, 1942, Finucane was killed during a raid on Étaples France. He was the highest scoring Irishman with 28 victories, total may vary.

The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft flown by the Royal Air Force and many other Allied countries during World War II and into the 1950s. First flown on March 5, 1936 the Spitfire entered operational service with the RAF in 1938. It served in several roles including interceptor, photo-reconnaissance, fighter bomber, carrier-based fighter and trainer. The Spitfire was built in many variants using several wing configurations. It was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft and the only British fighter in continuous production throughout the war. When production ended in February 1948, 20,351 Spitfires of all variants had been built.
