The 2nd Fighter Squadron was part of the 52nd Fighter Group. The unit was sent to England as part of the 8th Air Force and in 1943 was equipped with Spitfires to escort bombers. Desperate for fighters in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations the 52nd FG/2nd FS were sent to fill the need. In April 1944 the Spitfires were replaced by P-51 Mustangs. Capt. Fred Ohr was credited with 6 aerial victories, 1 in a Spitfire and 5 in his P-51 Mustang #44-13298 “Marie”.Opening canopy

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944. As well as being economical to produce, the P-51 was a fast and durable aircraft.
