Capt. John Voll was the third highest scoring P-51 Mustang pilot of World War II and the highest scoring USAAF pilot of the 15th Air Force with 21 confirmed victories. Voll scored his first victory on June 23, 1944, one month after joining the 308th FS/31st FG. He scored all of his victories in P-51s that he named “American Beauty”, six while flying P-51Bs. On November 16, 1944 twelve German Luftwaffe fighter aircraft attacked Voll while he was downing a Ju-52. He destroyed two Fw-190s, one Bf-109 and damaged several others.
The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944. As well as being economical to produce, the P-51 was a fast and durable aircraft.
