During World War II, Charles “Chuck” Yeager was assigned to the USAAF 363rd FS, 357th FG “The Yoxford Boys”. He was credited with 11.5 victories, most of which came in P-51D Mustang 44-14888 ‘Glamorous Glenn III’. On October 12, 1944 Yeager became an Ace in a day when he shot down 5 Bf-109’s. On November 6, 1944 he damaged 2 Me-262’s and destroyed a third. On November 27, 1944 he destroyed 3 Bf-109s. When Yeager returned to the USA, P-51 Mustang 44-14888 became “Melody’s Answer” and was destroyed on March 2, 1945.
The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944. As well as being economical to produce, the P-51 was a fast and durable aircraft.
