North American P-51D #9255/BA-U was first delivered to the USAAF in 1945 as #44-74602 and served with training units until December 6, 1950 when it arrived at the RCAF 424th (Auxiliary) Squadron (City of Hamilton) based at Mount Hope in Hamilton, Ontario. RCAF squadrons flew P-51s during World War II within the RAF and after the war Canada received 100 P-51Ds that stayed in service until 1956. P-51 9255/BA-U was later sold to a U.S. civilian and on December 30, 1958 it was registered as N6318T.
The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944. As well as being economical to produce, the P-51 was a fast and durable aircraft.
