P-51D Mustang 44-15310, named “DoDo”, was piloted by Capt. Clinton Burdick of the 361st FS 356th FG. Capt. Burdick was one of five 356th aces, scoring 5.5 victories, all against Fw 190s between November 25, 1944 and January 14 1945. On February 20, 1945 Burdick flew the last of his 53 combat missions. Clinton was the second Burdick ace; his father Lt. Howard Burdick flew a Sopwith Camel with the 17th Aero Squadron in World War I. He was credited with eight aerial victories and awarded the DFC and DSC.
The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944. As well as being economical to produce, the P-51 was a fast and durable aircraft.
