Lt. Col. Oleg Peshkov was a Russian pilot who was killed on November 24, 2015 while flying a Su-24 bomber from a Syrian air base. The Su-24 was shot down by a Turkish Air Force F-16 when, Turkey claimed, the Su-24 violated their airspace. The Navigator Konstantin Murakhtin survived and was rescued. Peshkov was posthumously awarded the Gold Star of Hero of the Russian Federation. It has been said Peshkov was killed by ground fire as he parachuted. To honor Peshkov, Su-34 10 Red had his name applied.
The Sukhoi Su-34 “Fullback” is an all-weather supersonic medium-range fighter-bomber / strike aircraft developed for the Russian Air Force and Navy with the intent to replace the Su-24M and Tu-22MS long-range bomber. The Fullback is based on the Su-27 “Flanker” and has an armored cockpit that is occupied by two-crew seated side-by-side. The aircraft’s main role is deployment against ground and/or naval targets. As of April 2018 there have been 122 aircraft manufactured including 7 prototypes. The export designation of the Su-34 is Su-32.
