On August 19, 2014 a Chinese PLAAF J-11BH "Blue 24" intercepted a U.S. P-8 Poseidon ASW aircraft over the South China Sea. It is claimed that the PLAAF pilot made several dangerous maneuvers at one point bringing his wing tip within 20 feet of the P-8. The J-11BH also passed very close under the P-8, crossed 90 degrees in front with its belly towards the U.S. aircraft as if displaying his weapons. Blue 24 also did a roll over the P-8 coming within 45 feet.
The Su-27 (NATO reporting name – Flanker) is a single-seat highly-maneuverable fighter aircraft built by Sukhoi Design Bureau as the Soviet response to the U.S. F-14 Eagle and F-15 Tomcat entering service in 1985. The primary role of the Su-27 was to provide defense against American bombers, USN ships and provide Soviet bomber escorts. There have been many improvements over the years resulting in numerous variants of the Su-27. The export variant, the Su-27SK was sold to China and eventually developed into the license-built Shenyang J-11.
