F-117 #85-831 first flew in 1987 and on December 1, 1988 was the first F-117 to test the new OCIP II upgrade. Between November 27 and December 6, 1990 #85-831 wore a painting of a skunk on its belly as a tribute to the Skunk Works. On December 6 1990 #85-831 was flown to Area 51 to celebrate the retirement of the company’s president Ben Rich. The painting was removed immediately after the event.
The F-117 Nighthawk is a twin-engine attack aircraft built by Lockheed for the U.S Air Force and the first operational military aircraft designed using stealth technology. The F-117 was first flown on June 18, 1981 and achieved initial operating capability in 1983. F-117’s took part in the 1991 Gulf War and Operation Allied Force in Yugoslavia, where one was downed by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) on March 27, 1999. It was the only Nighthawk lost in combat. The F-117 was also used during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Of the 64 F-117s built, 59 were production versions. The U.S. Air Force retired the F-117 in 2008.
