On September 6, 1976, Soviet Air Defence Forces pilot Lt. Viktor Belenko, based at Chuguyevka Air Base in Primorsky Krai, defected when he flew his MiG-25 to Hakodate airport in Japan. After being questioned extensively by both Japanese and United States officials Belenko was flown to the U.S. and granted political asylum. The MiG-25 was disassembled and carefully examined by U.S. military experts before being returned to the USSR. Belenko became a U.S. citizen in 1980.
