Northrop T-38 Talon NASA #901, AF serial #63-8181, was used by astronauts for travel and as a chase aircraft. On February 28, 1966 NASA 901, piloted by Commander Elliot See Jr and rear seat Captain Charles Bassett Jr. along with another T-38, NASA #907, departed Ellington Field in Texas for St. Louis, Missouri. The weather in St Louis was low broken clouds, rain, snow and fog. Commander See realized he was too high to land and did a visual go-around but struck the McDonnell Aircraft building killing both on board. Elliot See Jr. was selected in the second group of astronauts and chosen as the prime command pilot for what would have been his first space flight on Gemini 9. Charles Bassett Jr. was selected in the third group of astronauts and would have also flown his first space flight as pilot on Gemini 9.
