VBF-19 was established in January 1945 and re-designated VF-114 Aardvarks in 1950. In May 1991 VF-114 began a cruise on the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) and was originally headed to the Persian Gulf when it was diverted to the Philippines to evacuate military personnel when Mt. Pinatubo erupted. With this task completed, USS Abraham Lincoln proceeded to sail to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Storm, but when they arrived the task became post ceasefire patrols over countless burning Kuwaiti oil wells. In November 1991 VF-114 returned home and was disestablished in 1993.

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine variable sweep wing aircraft capable of supersonic flight. The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) who share the tasks of navigation, target acquisition, ECM, and weapons use. The Tomcat was only operated by the United States Navy and the Republic of Iran Air Force. The name “Tomcat” is said to come from the call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly, which conformed to the U.S Navy tradition of giving Grumman aircraft feline names.
