VF-2 was re-established in 1972 and began flying the F-14 Tomcat in July 1973, reaching a full complement of 12 aircraft in 1974. In April 1975 VF-2 flew over Saigon in South Vietnam during the U.S. evacuation of its personnel. VF-2 aircraft wear a red, white and blue band around the fuselage called the “Langley Stripe” referring to the stripes used on aircraft aboard the first USN aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1). F-14A Tomcat #159625 was sent to AMARCS in 1991.
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine variable sweep wing aircraft capable of supersonic flight. The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) who share the tasks of navigation, target acquisition, ECM, and weapons use. The Tomcat was only operated by the United States Navy and the Republic of Iran Air Force. The name “Tomcat” is said to come from the call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly, which conformed to the U.S Navy tradition of giving Grumman aircraft feline names.
