F/A-18E 165536 spent time with VX-31 “Dust Devils” and later VX-23 “Salty Dogs”. In early 2018 this aircraft joined two other F/A-18s for the filming of the movie “Top Gun: Maverick” as a “Hero Jet” for Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. When filming finished it was sent to be converted for use with the Blue Angels aerobatic team. Next the aircraft went to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23. On July 27, 2020 165536 was the first F/A-18E to join the “Blue Angels” and received the #1.
The McDonnell Douglas Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet is a twin-engine multi-role carrier-based aircraft. The “E” variant is single-seater while the “F” variant is a tandem-seat configuration. The E is a much larger, more advanced and more capable variant of the F/A-18C. The Super Hornet variant can carry a larger array of weapons as well as more of them and is capable of returning to the carrier while still carrying unspent munitions. The first flight of the F/A-18E took place in 1995 with delivery to the U.S. Navy starting in 1999.
