The first Electronic Attack Squadron 142 (VAQ-142) is a U.S. Navy squadron stationed at NAS Whidbey Island in Washington that was established on June 1, 1988 and deactivated in March 1991. The second VAQ-142 was established in 1997 and in 2003 deployed to Bagram Airfield Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They returned to Bagram in July 2006 until January 2007 flying 187 days of missions. In October 2007 VAQ-142 once again deployed for 6 months in support of “Operation Iraqi Freedom”.

The Northrop Grumman EA-6B Prowler is a twin-engine electronic warfare aircraft derived from the A-6 Intruder airframe and used by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. The EA-6A was the initial version developed for the Marine Corps in the 1960s. Development on the EA-6B began in 1966 and was first flown on May 25, 1968, entering operational service in July 1971. The aircrew consists of one pilot and three electronic countermeasures officers, although it is not uncommon for two ECMOs to be used on some missions. The EA-6B can be operated from aircraft carriers and land bases.

Although the Prowler was designed as an electronic warfare and command-and-control aircraft for air strike missions; it is capable of attacking some land based targets on its own, in particular enemy radar sites and surface-to-air missile launchers, using the AGM-88 anti-radiation missile.

Following its last deployment in late 2014 on the George H. W. Bush, the EA-6B was withdrawn from U.S. Navy service in June 2015 – having been replaced by the Boeing EA-18G Growler (an electronic warfare variant of the F/A-18F Super Hornet). The USMC plans to operate the EA-6B until 2019.
