Around the end of May of 2006 VAW-113 concluded operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and sailed to the coast of Guam to take part in Valiant Shield 2006. The Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye is a twin-turboprop airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft operated by the US Navy and the armed forces of several other countries. Developed in the late 1950s as a replacement for E-1 Tracer, the E-2 was first flown on October 21, 1960 and entered operational service in 1964. Variants of the E-2 have been in production since the 1960s, giving it the longest production run of any carrier-based aircraft. The E-2 is operated by a crew of five that includes a Pilot, Copilot, Radar Officer, Combat Information Center Officer and the Aircraft Control Officer.
