Lockheed F-35B line number BF-05 was first flown on January 27, 2011. This aircraft is the fifth development aircraft and was sent to VX-23 at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland for testing and training of personnel. VX-23 is the Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (AIRTEVRON TWO THREE) and uses the tail code SD 'Salty Dogs'. In August 2013 BF-05 landed on the USS Wasp to test short takeoffs and vertical landings. When BF-05 has completed JSF testing it will be assigned to VMFAT-501 “Warlords” at Eglin AFB, Florida.

The Lockheed F-35 Lightning II is a fifth generation multi-role fighter aircraft that combines radar evading stealth technology with supersonic speed and extreme agility. The three variants of the Lightning II are the F-35A, B, and C. The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant. It features two internal weapons bays and six external hardpoints for mounting a variety of weapons under the wings plus an internal 25 mm cannon. The F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant while the F-35C is the carrier-based variant.

The F-35 was first flown on December 15, 2006 and is scheduled to enter operational service in the coming years with the United States military and the air forces of several other nations that were partners in the development cost of the aircraft.
