The first F-15EX Eagle 20-0001 completed its maiden flight February 2, 2021 and was accepted by the USAF on March 10, 2021 and belongs to the 40th Flight Test Squadron (40 FTS) at Eglin AFB in Florida. April 20, 2021 saw the arrival of the second F-15EX Eagle II serial #20-0002 that belongs to the 85th Test and Evaluation Squadron (85 TES), part of the 53rd Wing at Eglin AFB in Florida. The USAF hopes to purchase 76 F-15EXs over 5 years and eventually a total of 144 aircraft.
In 1967 the United States became aware of the Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat. This made it necessary to develop a new aircraft to counter the MiG-25. The USAF rejected the USN F-14 Tomcat and issued its own requirements. The solution came in the form of the McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing) F-15 Eagle. The F-15A made its inaugural flight in July 1972 and in January 1976 the first Eagle entered service. The "E" entered service in 1989. The F-15 was the first dedicated USAF air superiority fighter since the F-86 Sabre.
