The Republic of Singapore Air Force has two squadrons of F-15SGs; 142nd Sqn “Gryphon” and 149th “Shikra” (Sparrow Hawk) based at Paya Lebar, Air Base. The F-15SG Strike Eagle is an advanced variant of the F-15E and can perform air-to-air and air-to-ground attack missions in all weather conditions. The 142nd Squadron’s motto is “Honor and Glory” and the Gryphon chosen as their mascot. The unit was disbanded but reactivated in 2016 when the F-15SGs arrived.

The F-15SG Strike Eagle (formerly F-15T) is a variant of the F-15E, ordered by the Republic of Singapore Air Force. F-15SGs were chosen in September 2005 over the Dassault Rafale. The F-15SG remains critical to having air superiority aircraft over neighboring countries that deploy state of the art Russian aircraft. The RSAF's F-15SG is an all-weather multi-role fighter aircraft designed to achieve air superiority. The F-15SG is the most advanced version of the Eagle with its great speed, maneuverability, electronics and weapons.

In 1967 the United States became aware of the Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat. This made it necessary to develop a new aircraft to counter the MiG-25. The USAF rejected the USN F-14 Tomcat and issued its own requirements. The solution came in the form of the McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing) F-15 Eagle. The F-15A made its inaugural flight in July 1972 and in January 1976 the first Eagle entered service. The "E" entered service in 1989. The F-15 was the first dedicated USAF air superiority fighter since the F-86 Sabre.
