The first Boeing F-15EX serial 20-0001 commonly known as “EX-1” completed its maiden flight on February 2, 2021 and was delivered March 10, 2021. On April 20, 2021 an official ceremony was held at Eglin AFB, Florida and the new aircraft was named F-15 Eagle II. This is the most advanced version of the F-15 ever built 48 years since the first F-15A flew. The USAF hopes to purchase 76 F-15EXs over 5 years and a final total of 144. The F-15EX is ready to fight as they leave the production line.
In 1967 the United States became aware of the Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat. This made it necessary to develop a new aircraft to counter the MiG-25. The USAF rejected the USN F-14 Tomcat and issued its own requirements. The solution came in the form of the McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing) F-15 Eagle. The F-15A made its inaugural flight in July 1972 and in January 1976 the first Eagle entered service. The "E" entered service in 1989. The F-15 was the first dedicated USAF air superiority fighter since the F-86 Sabre.
