NASA received three F-15Ds to replace their aging F-15Bs. F-15D 79-0007 c/n 0577/D018 was originally delivered to the US Air Force on August 25, 1980. On September 11, 2010 the aircraft arrived at the Dryden Flight Research Center and given the civil registration #N897NA. All three F-15D replacements were former 325th Fighter Wing aircraft that were based at Tyndall AFB in Florida. The F-15Ds had their military equipment removed and were tasked with flight research and mission support.
