On September 19 2019 the first two of twenty F-35A Lightning IIs were delivered to the Vermont Air National Guard’s 134th FS, 158th FW. With the arrival of these two aircraft, F-35A #17-5265 ‘VT’/‘158 FW’ (c/n AF-207) and F-35A 17-5266 ‘VT’ (c/n AF-208), the Vermont ANG became the first Air National Guard unit to receive the F-35 and the second operational wing in the USAF. In December 2019, three more F-35As arrived at Burlington. Originally formed as the 158th Fighter Group (Air Defense) and allotted to the Vermont ANG in 1956 the 158th eventually became the 158th FW in late 1995.

The Lockheed F-35 Lightning II is a fifth generation multi-role fighter aircraft that combines radar evading stealth technology with supersonic speed and extreme agility. The three variants of the Lightning II are the F-35A, B, and C. The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant. It features two internal weapons bays and six external hardpoints for mounting a variety of weapons under the wings plus an internal 25 mm cannon. The F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant while the F-35C is the carrier-based variant. It was designed to replace the U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon, U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornet and the U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet and AV-8 Harrier II. The F-35 was first flown on December 15, 2006.
