The 4th Fighter Squadron was formed as the 4th Pursuit Squadron in 1941. Based at Naha Air Base, Okinawa in 1948 the 4th PS lost half of their aircraft to a devastating storm so they chose the name “Fightin Fuujins” after the Okinawan God of Wind “Fuujin”. The 4th Pursuit Squadron fought in Korea, Vietnam and conflicts against Iraq. In 1965 the unit was designated 4th Tactical Fighter Squadron and in 1975 moved to Hill AFB in Utah as part of the 388th FW. In 1991 they were re-designated as the 4th Fighter Squadron. In 2017 the 4th FS became the second unit to re-equip with the F-35A.
The Lockheed F-35 Lightning II is a fifth generation multi-role fighter aircraft that combines radar evading stealth technology with supersonic speed and extreme agility. The three variants of the Lightning II are the F-35A, B, and C. The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant. It features two internal weapons bays and six external hardpoints for mounting a variety of weapons under the wings plus an internal 25 mm cannon. The F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant while the F-35C is the carrier-based variant. It was designed to replace the U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon, U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornet and the U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet and AV-8 Harrier II.
